TITLE: Manager, Development and Education Partnerships
REPORTS TO: Vice President, Education
POSITION SUMMARY
The Manager, Development and Education Partnerships, is responsible for managing and coordinating fund-raising for Space Foundation education outreach programs along with other Foundation priorities. In this capacity, he or she works closely with senior managers in establishing funding priorities and advises them on trends in the philanthropic world which affect organizational priorities.
The Manager, Development and Education Partnerships, is responsible for developing, in concert with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and Vice President, Education, a sound development plan and set of procedures to ensure good working relationships within the Space Foundation and to ensure the efficient pursuit of philanthropic funding for Foundation programs, initiatives, and operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Coordinates and manages the relationship of the Foundation with corporations, foundations, and individuals from whom funds are sought for various programs, projects and operations.
• Possesses an understanding of current philanthropic and public relations interests of individuals, foundations, and/or corporations, acquired through regular contact with those individuals and organizations.
• Maintains appropriate donor relations programs to keep the Foundation name and achievements alive in the minds of individuals, corporate and foundation executives, and others as appropriate.
• Researches the changing goals and interests of corporate, individual, and foundation philanthropy, allowing the Foundation to respond to shifting priorities and develop dormant or opportunistic interests into winning fundraising proposals.
• Provides senior management with a clear sense of what kinds of programs might reasonably be expected to receive funding (and at what levels) from corporate, individual, and foundation sources, thus facilitating financial planning within the Foundation.
• Develops and updates the fundraising strategy plan and carries out specific projects. Identifies potential philanthropic partners and determines appropriate targets for funding.
• At his/her own initiative, and with the engagement of other organization personnel, e.g. the Senior Vice President, Strategic Partnerships, approaches individuals, corporations, and foundation officials and negotiates the terms of their support to the Foundation. This process includes the writing and submission of specific grant proposals.
• Maintains a comprehensive record of past and current approaches to outside funding sources so as to prevent unnecessary conflicts.
• Based upon his/ her knowledge about the special interests of individuals, corporations, and foundations, counsels Foundation team members on matters relating to private funding, advising which funding sources might be appropriate for particular projects and the best manner of approaching them, and helping to formulate specific projects requiring support.
• Based upon his/her analysis, writes documents to describe projects to prospective donors and to persuade them to provide funding.
• Prepares, for signature of the Chief Executive Officer or appropriate Space Foundation officials, fundraising related correspondence directed to individuals, corporations, and foundation officers. Responds as appropriate to questions posed by potential donors regarding Foundation proposals.
• Maintains contact with donors after receipt of contributions including preparing acknowledgements, planning, and coordinating donor recognition events, and assuring periodic reports as may be required by the donor.
Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Gregarious and charismatic when meeting people and building relationships; highly developed interpersonal skills; experience and savvy speaking and writing with tact, diplomacy, and/or authority. Successful experience in a highly visible fundraising position, including grant writing, major gifts, and corporate relations. Organized thinker, self-disciplined, self-starter, works best under the pressure of many priorities and deadlines. Thorough understanding of local, regional, and national markets relative to current philanthropic trends. Visionary with knowledge of fundraising strategies and techniques. Ability to quickly grasp national trends in education and within the space industry.
Bachelors Degree, MPA in fundraising or nonprofit management preferred. AFP or CFRE credentials a plus. Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience, including experience with successful donor development programs, successful grant requests, and successful capital campaigns.
