Summer of Discovery: Week 3 - Astronauts!

Space Foundation Discovery Center, 4425 Arrowswest Dr., Colorado Springs, Colo.

Beginning Tuesday, June 4, the Space Foundation Discovery Center will be open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the Summer of Discovery! Each week will focus on a specific theme, culminating with a full day of special activities and events planned for each Saturday. Bring your family and friends and join in the fun - we've brought Space down to Earth for all to enjoy!

Week 3: June 18 - 22
Astronauts!

They are our heroes! Those willing to risk their lives in the hopes of bettering mankind through the exploration of space. Since U.S. manned spaceflight began through Project Mercury, many brave men and women have ventured outside of Earth's atmosphere. You can hear firsthand accounts from some of those heroes during the Discovery Center "Astronauts!" week. Please be prepared to ask questions. This is an opportunity you won't want to miss!


Activities for Kids

There will be plenty of kid-friendly activities, included with the price of admission:

  • Moon Walk Bounce House
  • Craft Table
  • Interactive Touch & Learn activities and giveaways
    • Astronaut Patches - distributed during the week
    • Astronaut Helmets - FREE to the first 150 children on Saturday!
  • Glove Boxes - a hands-on station with three different activities - using a robot to collect a rock specimen, drawing a maze with visual clues from a mirror and completing a LEGO puzzle - inside a box with access only with bulky gloves.
  • Stomp Rocketskids can create a rocket they will launch by stomping on a 2-liter soda bottle
  • Space Warriors - a family-friendly film, from director SeanMcNamara and starring Dermot Mulroney and Danny Glover, will loop continuosly in our auditorium

The Astronaut Wives Club, autographed by author Lily Koppel, which tells the true tory of the wives of the Mercury Seven astronauts and their remarkable friendship of more than 50 years!

Do Your Ears Pop in Space?, by former astronaut R. Mike Mullane, which answers 500 popular space questions such as: How does a space toilet work? Have astronauts seen UFOs? How do astronauts eat, drink bathe, brush their teeth, etc.? 

How do you win? A drawing will be held following each astronaut presentation (see below for schedule of astronaut presentations). One adult at each presentation will win a copy of The Astronaut Wives Club and one child at each presentation will win a copy of Do Your Ears Pop in Space? Must be present and in attendance during the astronaut's presentation to be eligible for drawing. 


Astronaut Presentations

Throughout the week, several former NASA astronauts will be giving presentations, either via video teleconference or in person, followed by 15-minute Q&A sessions with the audience. This is your chance to find out everything there is to know about being an astronaut and working in space - and get a signed photo (click blue button below to reserve your photo)!
