Space Foundation Student Art Contest Grand Prize Winners are NamedCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May. 12, 2011) — Four students from three states have been named grand prize winners in the Space Foundation’s first student art contest. All winners were recognized at a special ceremony in April at the 27th National Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo., where two former NASA astronauts, Richard Hieb and Danny Olivas, announced the grand prize winners selected from among the three first place winners for each age category.

The grand prize winners are:

Grades PreK-2: Emma Fusco, Arthur S. May Elementary, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
Grades 3-5: Dimitra Theard, Greenwood School, Denver
Grades 6-8: Suney Yang, Farnsworth Aerospace School, St. Paul, Minn.
Grades 9-12: Colleen Fannin, Sand Creek High School, Colorado Springs, Colo.

Students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade were invited to submit original artwork depicting the theme, “Human Space Travel in the Year 2020,” resulting in entries from more than 150 students in 13 states. Entries were judged in four grade categories – preK-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 – and three style categories – drawing, painting and multimedia.

“We were very pleased by both the quality of the art submitted and the number of submissions,” said Space Foundation Vice President — Education Iain Probert. “It was fascinating to see how the children envisioned future space travel.”

Each winning artist received a Fisher Space Pen, a ribbon and an invitation to attend the award presentation. Each Grand Prize winner received an art kit from ARES Corporation. Winning entries were displayed at the Symposium outside of the ARES Education Auditorium in the Boeing Exhibit Center Lower Level. The contest was co-sponsored by ARES Corporation and Fisher Space Pen Co.
