IMAX® 3D Space Film HUBBLE 3D Debuts March 19
Since few of us of us will ever experience space travel, the next best thing might be the new IMAX® 3D space film, HUBBLE 3D. Narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, HUBBLE 3D is an IMAX and Warner Bros. Pictures production, in cooperation with NASA. For nearly 30 years, IMAX and NASA have teamed to produce films with the goal of educating and inspiring multiple generations about the wonders of space; HUBBLE 3D is the eighth space film collaboration.
The IMAX 3D camera, which flew onboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis, captured stunning 3D images of the intricate spacewalks required to service the telescope during the most recent mission last May. Footage shot by the STS-125 astronauts provides an intimate look at the complexities of repairing the telescope and puts IMAX audiences alongside the spacewalking astronauts. HUBBLE 3D combines this footage with never-before-seen 3D flights through our universe, allowing movie-goers to journey through distant galaxies to explore the grandeur and mysteries of our celestial surroundings.
HUBBLE 3D will be released exclusively in IMAX® and IMAX 3D theatres worldwide beginning March 19, with expansion to additional IMAX locations on April 23, the Hubble Space Telescope’s 20th Anniversary.
Launched in 1990 and greatly extended in its scientific powers through new instrumentation, the Hubble Space Telescope has validated the original concept from Lyman Spitzer, Jr., of a large, space-based observatory orbiting far above the distorting effects of the Earth’s atmosphere. According to IMAX, “HUBBLE 3D enables audiences to understand the profound significance of the greatest scientific instrument since Galileo’s original telescope and how it has forever changed both our view of the universe and of ourselves.”
More information is available on the newly-launched website for the film, www.imax.com/hubble. Updates will be posted periodically, including behind-the-scenes webisodes, such as with STS-125 Astronaut Michael Massimino.
