Fourth Quarter 2013 : 01/29/2014

The Space Foundation Infrastructure Index, with 14 percent growth, led all other tracked indexes for the second straight quarter, as can be seen in Exhibit 1. The other four indexes showed relatively strong performance, with quarterly growth ranging from 9 percent to 11 percent heading into the new year.

Space Foundation Index Performance Second Quarter 2013 : 07/30/2013

The second quarter of 2013 saw sustained, but slowing, growth in every index except for the Space Foundation Infrastructure Index, which led the way with 7.75 percent growth (double its first quarter growth) as can be seen in Exhibit 1. For the first half of the year, the five tracked indexes performed fairly evenly, within 1.5 percentage points of each other.

Space Sector Outperformed S&P 500 and NASDAQ in Fourth Quarter 2012 : 02/01/2013

The fourth quarter of 2012 saw continued strength in the space sector. The companies in the Space Foundation Services Index led the way with nearly 8 percent growth, followed by those in the Space Foundation Index and the Space Foundation Infrastructure Index (up 6.26 percent and 5.23 percent, respectively). In contrast, both the S&P 500 Index and the NASDAQ Composite were down for the quarter, as can be seen in Exhibit 1.

The third quarter of 2012 saw a broad market rebound from the losses in the second quarter. The Space Foundation Services Index led the way with a fast-paced 18 percent growth rate. The Space Foundation Indexes cooled off with the rest of the market in the second quarter of 2012 after two quarters of fast-paced growth. All tracked indexes were slightly down for the period. Index Shows First Quarter Gains : 06/06/2012

The Space Foundation Indexes followed a strong fourth quarter of 2011 with significant gains in the first quarter of 2012. The Space Foundation Services Index and the Space Foundation Infrastructure Index outperformed the Space Foundation Index which in turn slightly outgained the S&P 500 Index for the quarter as can be seen in Exhibit 1. The NASDAQ Composite led all the other indexes with its strongest first quarter performance in 21 years as the stock markets benefitted from a steadily improving economic outlook.

The Space Foundation Indexes ended the year in positive territory, outperforming the NASDAQ and S&P 500 for the year. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the Space Foundation Indexes recovered much of the ground lost in the third quarter. The Space Foundation Index grew in the fourth quarter by 12.64 percent and finished the year with a gain of nearly 7 percent, making it easily the best performing index tracked by the Space Foundation in 2011. Space Foundation Index Declined

It was a difficult quarter for most of the U.S. stock market and the Space Foundation Indexes were no exception. The third quarter of 2011 saw an abrupt end to the growth that characterized the first half of the year. The Space Foundation Index declined in the third quarter by slightly more than 20 percent, erasing earlier gains and putting the index into negative territory for the year. Both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite indexes also declined significantly over this period, as can be seen in Exhibit 1.

Space Foundation Index Shows Industry Growth

The Space Foundation Index continued its upward momentum in the first half of 2011 with an 18.9 percent increase in value. The index performed well in each quarter, outpacing both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite indexes by a substantial margin as can be seen in the chart below.

The Space Foundation Services Index had double-digit growth each quarter and led all indexes for the first half of the year. The Space Foundation Infrastructure Index outperformed its counterpart in the first quarter, but declined in the second quarter.
