Index Performance in 4Q 2011 : 02/01/2012

The Space Foundation Indexes ended the year in positive territory, outperforming the NASDAQ and S&P 500 for the year. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the Space Foundation Indexes recovered much of the ground lost in the third quarter. The Space Foundation Index grew in the fourth quarter by 12.64 percent and finished the year with a gain of nearly 7 percent, making it easily the best performing index tracked by the Space Foundation in 2011. Both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite Indexes also recovered significantly during the fourth quarter, as can be seen in Exhibit 1.

Space Foundation Index Declined

It was a difficult quarter for most of the U.S. stock market and the Space Foundation Indexes were no exception. The third quarter of 2011 saw an abrupt end to the growth that characterized the first half of the year. The Space Foundation Index declined in the third quarter by slightly more than 20 percent, erasing earlier gains and putting the index into negative territory for the year. Both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite indexes also declined significantly over this period, as can be seen in Exhibit 1.

Space Foundation Index Shows Industry Growth

The Space Foundation Index continued its upward momentum in the first half of 2011 with an 18.9 percent increase in value. The index performed well in each quarter, outpacing both the S&P 500 and NASDAQ Composite indexes by a substantial margin as can be seen in the chart below.

The Space Foundation Services Index had double-digit growth each quarter and led all indexes for the first half of the year. The Space Foundation Infrastructure Index outperformed its counterpart in the first quarter, but declined in the second quarter.
