LIFE magazine to be recognized at 20th National Space Symposium

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Dec. 15, 2003) — The Space Foundation announced today the selection of LIFE magazine as the recipient of the 2004 Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award. The award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to public awareness of – and support for – the exploration and development of space, will be presented to LIFE Editor Robert Sullivan on March 29 during the opening ceremony of the 20th National Space Symposium. The National Space Symposium, hosted by the Space Foundation, is the premier annual space industry conference anywhere in the world. Morrow Public Outreach Award honors LIFE magazine for its award-winning photojournalistic coverage of the U.S. space program since its inception, resulting in historic coverage on the covers and in the pages of LIFE and LIFE special publications that has informed, educated and inspired three generations of Americans about the beauty, splendor, wonder and benefit of human kinds’ exploration, development and use of space. The Space Foundation annually presents the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award in memory of the late Douglas S. Morrow, renowned Academy Award winning writer and producer, space advocate, and former Space Foundation Director, to an individual or organization that has made significant contributions to public awareness of space programs. Previous Morrow Award recipients include space artist Robert T. McCall, the late Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry, Popular Science magazine, and the crew of Space Shuttle Mission STS-95. “From the earliest exploits of the German rocket scientists, to the gut-wrenching loss of shuttle Columbia, LIFE has faithfully captured in pictures and words humanity’s sublime reach toward the stars,” said Space Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Elliot G.
