Exposure to microgravity negatively affects human balance, and falls in space are no laughing matter. Zibrio’s technology – originally called iShoe – was created to fit inside a space boot to measure astronauts’ balance during and after space flight, enabling medical staff to assess their fitness for particular tasks and to minimize errors. Since then the company has adapted the technology into a more familiar interface for use here on Earth.
1/3 of older Americans fall each year, and every 13 seconds such a fall requires an emergency room visit. A person’s balance can change every day and there are many ways to improve it at any age, but most people don’t realize they have a problem until after a fall.
