For the past 10 years, the Petit Family Foundation has been remembering and honoring the memories of Jennifer, Hayley and Michaela to continue their many acts of kindness and activism. Their legacy has positively touched the lives of thousands.

By 2023, nearly half of all U.S. jobs will be in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), yet, too few students are pursuing majors in those areas, hindering our global competitiveness.

Annually, through Space Foundation education programs, more than 46,000 students receive in-person, hands-on STEM education, using the excitement of space to turn students’ attention to the fascinating world of science and technology.

Proceeds from the Soar to the Stars Gala will be used to deliver the Space Foundation’s robust and immersive STEM education programs in the east coast area. In doing so, this further fulfills the Petit Family Foundation’s mission to educate young people, especially girls and women in science.

In conjunction with the Soar to the Stars evening gala, the Petit Family Foundation and the Space Foundation will host a free STEM experience for girls in the Hartford area, with interactive activities to spark their interest in the sciences. Girls age 12 to 18 years will be able to participate in four different hands-on activities, led by Space Foundation accredited and award-winning educators, all of whom are former classroom master teachers.

LIDAR Surface Mapping–LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology is used to make 3D representations of landscape and has also been used to uncover underground ruins. During this activity, LIDAR technology will be used to map uneven surfaces.

Robotics Coding–Learn the basics of coding and discover whether it is easier to write code for a sphero droid or a human.

Rocket Engineering–Bring out your inner mechanical engineer by designing and building a rocket, then testing its flight ability.

Design Lab–Using imagination and a collection of creative materials, make a STEM-themed table centerpiece.
