Space Foundation Events Celebrate World Space Week

Written by: developer

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Oct. 6, 2015) – In Colorado this week, and around the world, space enthusiasts, professionals, students and hobbyists are celebrating humankinds’ achievements in space during World Space Week.

In 1999, the United Nations General Assembly declared that World Space Week would be held each year from October 4-10. It is recognized as the largest public event on the planet inspired by space exploration, space science and technology, and is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association (WSWA).

In Colorado, the public is invited to share in the excitement of World Space Week by attending an exclusive breakfast with Dr. Leroy Chiao, a former NASA astronaut and International Space Station commander who serves as the Space Foundation’s Special Advisor – Human Spaceflight. Breakfast with an Astronaut will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 8:30 a.m. -10:00 a.m. at the Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs. Reservations are required and ticket price includes admission to the Discovery Center’s space exhibits. The Discovery Center is located at 4425 Arrowswest Drive in Colorado Springs, just off of Garden of the Gods Road. For ticket information, call 719.576.8000.

Also during World Space Week, more than 250 Pikes Peak region students will visit the Discovery Center for special Audience with an Astronaut™ presentations featuring Dr. Chiao. The purpose of the program is to inspire students’ interest in careers associated with space exploration, such as science, technology and engineering.

Dr. Chiao and the Space Foundation education team will also host Audience with an Astronaut for an additional 1,000 students, including students at James Irwin Charter School in Colorado Springs and students bused from select schools to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
