Space Foundation receives Chairperson's Award for Excellence in Local Industry

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Nov. 6, 2006) — The Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has named the Space Foundation the recipient of its Chairperson’s Award for Excellence in Local Industry. The Space Foundation received the honor at the Colorado Springs EDC’s awards ceremony and presentation Thursday, Nov. 2, at The Broadmoor Hotel. Space Foundation President and Chief Executive Officer Elliot G. Pulham and Senior Vice President for Policy and Public Affairs Steve Eisenhart attended the ceremony.

“Colorado Springs is immensely proud to be home to the Space Foundation. The National Space Symposium is a magnet for industry leaders and a major boost to the Colorado Springs economy. Elliot Pulham and the leadership at the Space Foundation have been outstanding community partners and instrumental in advancing Colorado to the forefront of the nation’s space industry,” commented Mike Kazmierski, president and chief executive officer of the Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation.

“The Space Foundation is deeply honored to be chosen for this award,” said Pulham. “While we work activities and events around the nation from our offices in Washington and Florida and representatives in New York and Houston, we are proud to call Colorado Springs our headquarters and home. We are pleased the EDC recognizes the significance of our signature National Space Symposium and what it means to our industry and our community in bringing global leaders to Colorado Springs.”

The Colorado Springs Economic Development Corporation presents the Chairperson’s Award for Excellence in Local Industry to organizations that have made a unique and exceptional contribution to the community. The Fine Arts Center also received the Chairperson’s Award. Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera and County Commissioner Sallie Clark presented the awards on behalf of the EDC.

The Space Foundation was nominated for the Chairperson’s Award for Excellence in Local Industry for its dedication, throughout nearly 23 years headquartered in Colorado Springs, to promoting growth of the Colorado Springs’ economy. The Space Foundation’s National Space Symposium generates $22 million annually for the local economy.

While pursuing its mission to advance civil, commercial, and national security space endeavors and to inspire, enable, and propel tomorrow’s explorers, the Space Foundation also has been instrumental in driving growth in the state’s space industry, which now ranks as the third largest in the nation. The Space Foundation has a direct economic impact on Colorado Springs through the National Space Symposium, through its various education programs such as Teacher Liaisons and Summer Institute graduate courses, and through its ongoing promotion of the local aerospace industry.
