A system engineering and acquisition approach for software resiliency

Software intensive space satellite systems have vulnerabilities which our adversaries can exploit and may also be susceptible to insider threat.  From a system perspective, one must also consider the resiliency and security of the system architecture, software, hardware, and other components throughout the system life cycle.  Robust software engineering practices contribute to the foundation of a resilient system so that the system can take a hit to a critical component and recover in a known, bounded, and generally acceptable period of time.  Security must be a priority from the beginning and we should require that resiliency be addressed in early life cycle development of secure software and software intensive space satellite systems. The purpose of this presentation is to help those who develop, implement, and operate computer networks and systems in determining the factors and system engineering practices to include when investing in software resiliency for space satellite system architectures (e.g., Command and Control, Data Processing, Jamming, Crypto Keys).
