NASA’s Space Launch System

Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team

NASA is developing a new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS). It is designed for space missions beyond Low Earth Orbit, and when complete, SLS will be the most powerful rocket system ever built.

Its Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle is designed to carry crewed missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond. The first SLS mission will be Artemis 1, which will be an integrated test of the new SLS, Orion and ground systems at Kennedy Space Center.
