Statement on the Passing of Gen. Thomas P. Stafford, USAF/NASA Gemini, Apollo and Apollo-Soyuz Astronaut

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — March 18, 2024 — Heather Pringle, CEO of Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 for the global space ecosystem, issued the following statement today on the passing of Gen. Thomas P. Stafford, USAF /  NASA Gemini, Apollo and Apollo-Soyuz astronaut.

“From an era that introduced our nation and the world to our first space pioneers and legends, Gen. Stafford stood apart. His technical brilliance, operational skills and exceptional leadership talents would transform our nation’s capabilities for spaceflight, national security and international collaborations in space. As the 2019 recipient of Space Foundation’s highest award, the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award, we were honored to celebrate his incredible career of service to our country and the entire space community. His unparalleled service and legacy continues today and will forever inform and inspire new generations to explore, secure and build relationships that make for a better future. Space Foundation extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and many admirers who were touched by his life.”
