Space Foundation Issues White Paper in Favor of Continued Funding of the James Webb Space Telescope

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jul. 27, 2011) — The newly released Space Foundation white paper “The James Webb Space Telescope: A Worthy Investment in Space Science – July 2011” provides a concise and compelling argument for fully funding the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) at the level requested in the President’s Fiscal Year 2012 Budget.
It provides four primary compelling reasons for continuing development of JWST, including its potential to provide data for ground-breaking science and its contribution to the development and eventual deployment of innovative, cutting-edge technologies.
The paper addresses JWST’s international partners and the importance of living up to international commitments. Finally, the technological progress and potential benefits, as a whole, are compared to the estimated cost of completing the project, concluding that removing funding at this point in the program would represent a “penny wise and pound foolish” approach to stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
