What’s Going On at the Discovery Center This Month

Written by: developer

The Space Foundation Discovery Center is going to be a busy this month! We invite homeschool students to join us for two Homeschool Days in May. “Tinkering” will be offered Wednesday, May 4, and Thursday, May 19. Homeschool students will search out the inventor inside and learn how toys work, build a mini game, design a musical instrument and more. Don't miss these last Homeschool Days of the school year. As the end of the school year approaches, our monthly Homeschool Days will end until the fall.

On Saturday, May 7, we will feature our final Star Days event of the academic year. Join us as we explore the other side of the universe and search for “Alien Worlds.” On this special Saturday, visitors can pose for photos as explorers on an alien world, design their own alien spacecraft and learn about exoplanets on Science On a Sphere®. Star Days will return after our Summer of Discovery program, June 11 - Aug. 6. Star Days is sponsored in part by Raytheon and Uwingu.

Also taking a summer hiatus is our Space Story Party. On Tuesday, May 10, we will be reading Space Boy and his Dog with special guest, author Dian Curtis Regan. After the reading, the book will be available for purchase and participants will be able to get their copy signed. We will have moon juice and space treats to snack on, as well as some fun and creative activities to take home.

Tesla’s Toolbox: Kinetic Reactions will be the grand finale to our school year programming. Sponsored in part by Uwingu, Tesla’s Toolbox is the melding of creativity and technology for families and young adults. Join us Saturday morning, May 21, as we build a Rube Goldberg Machine, also known as a chain reaction machine. Learn more about Tesla’s Toolbox here.

We believe that space and science is fun and exciting for everyone, not just the kiddos, so we want to be sure all the adults out there have an event just for them! The 21+ Space Mixer is that event and this month we will get in gear with a night of vintage fun. STEM Punk Vintage Space is the theme and the evening’s events will include a tea dual, Zeppelin races, Steampunk costume crafting and a Victorian cocktail tasting. The Tesla Steampunk group will be here to help get the gears into motion, so don’t miss out!

Is your favorite program leaving for the summer? Don’t worry! Summer of Discovery is on its way, starting June 11. This summer we will explore the Heroes of Space. Be sure to watch our online calendar for all of the latest and greatest events at the Space Foundation Discovery Center.

Please note: Space Foundation offices and Discovery Center will be CLOSED for Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, May 28 – Monday, May 30.
