High Honors Awarded at Space Symposium Opening Ceremonies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — April 17, 2023 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983, offering information, education and collaboration for the global space ecosystem, today distributed its most prominent awards at the annual Space Symposium’s opening ceremonies for their distinguished achievements.

Dan Goldin – 2023 General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award

Daniel S. Goldin was awarded the 2023 General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award for his distinguished leadership and history making achievements in national security, civil space programs, space science and international collaborations that have shaped the global space community into what it is today. The longest serving NASA administrator, and former aerospace industry executive, Goldin pioneered programs and initiatives in intelligence/national security, civil, commercial, space science and technological space sectors, that have transformed how government, industry and research work with space.

James Webb Space Telescope Program Team – 2023 John L. “Jack” Swigert Jr. Award for Space Exploration

The James Webb Space Telescope program team has been awarded the 2023 John L. “Jack” Swigert Jr. Award for Space Exploration for their groundbreaking accomplishments in astronomy, space science and space exploration. Within its first year of operations, the work and revelations of the James Webb Space Telescope team have opened new chapters of knowledge and inspiration about our solar systems and the countless galaxies beyond it. 

NASA’s DART Team – 2023 Space Achievement Award

NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) team has received the 2023 Space Achievement Award for their outstanding accomplishment of redirecting the asteroid Dimorphos with kinetic impactor technology. The DART team pioneered the world’s first-ever planetary defense demonstration, providing a viable option to prevent sizable space objects from colliding with Earth.

U.S. Postal Service – 2023 Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award: 

The United States Postal Service has been awarded the 2023 Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award to recognize their more than 60 years of creative leadership through the use of stamps to celebrate space achievements in exploration, astronomy, space flight, Earth science, as well as the pioneering men and women who have led the way to the stars and beyond.
