Lucy Enos Scholarship Recipient Attends Space Across the Curriculum Course

Written by: developer

A new Space Foundation Space Across the Curriculum teacher professional development course started this week at the Space Foundation Discovery Institute in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Lunar/Mars Exploration and Base Construction explores the requirements for establishing and maintaining a human presence on the Moon or Mars. Topics include discussion of growing food on Mars and creating oxygen. Teachers enrolled in the course also build a model of a Lunar or Mars base as the culminating class project.

The 17 educators attending the course represent schools in Alaska, Colorado, Hawai'i, Massachusetts and Nebraska. The teacher from Hawai'i is M. Thomas Gammarino, Ph.D., the 2012 recipient of the Space Foundation Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship. Gammarino is an English teacher from Punahou Academy in Honolulu and he was chosen for the scholarship on the strength of his application letter, which described his interest in science and how he would apply learning from the course in his English classes. His application was also supported by a strong letter of recommendation from his school's principal.

The Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship is funded by Space Foundation Chief Executive Officer Elliot Holokauahi Pulham and his wife, Cynthia A. Pulham, to honor the memory of Elliot's grandmother, Lucy Enos, who was born in Pahala, Hawai'i, in 1898.

The scholarship is offered annually to educators of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry or who work with pre-K-12 students of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry. It covers travel expenses, meals and lodging, tuition and fees for the recipient to spend a week in Colorado Springs attending a Space Across the Curriculum course.

The next application deadline will be in April 2013. See more at www.discoverspace.org/education/scholarships.
