Space Foundation Leadership Participates in PIPES Roll Out

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jun. 21, 2007) — Space Foundation leadership participated in the public roll out of the Partnership in Innovation Preparation for Educators and Students (PIPES) program at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs (UCCS) on June 21, 2007. This program, a long-term initiative undertaken by UCCS and the Space Foundation, is intended to address the growing problem of insufficiently qualified individuals to fill needed positions in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Participants from the Space Foundation included President and Chief Executive Officer Elliot Pulham, Chief Operating Officer Chuck Zimkas, Chief Financial Officer Holly Roberts, Chief of Staff Jim Jannette, Vice President of Marketing and Creative Services Frank Trevino, Director of Education Enterprise Iain Probert, and Manager of Communication and Media Relations Kendra Horn. UCCS Chancellor Dr. Pam Shockley-Zalabak and other UCCS staff representing the PIPES program presented an overview of this innovative program.

Federal funding from the United States Air Force Office of Scientific Research will support the first three years of the program. Through PIPES, the Space Foundation and UCCS will design, develop and implement a systematic and replicable program for students and teachers aimed at increasing the number of students who major in STEM disciplines. More details about the Space Foundation’s role in this program will be available in the coming months.
