COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sep. 18, 2009) — The Space Foundation is playing a key role in the Colorado Springs’ Pikes Peak Library District’s All Pikes Peak Reads (APPR) program – including staging an educational model rocket demonstration this Sunday at the All Pikes Peak Reads Launch Party in Colorado Springs.

APPR encourages diverse groups of all ages to read and discuss the same books and explore relevant social issues related to themes in the APPR selection. The 2009 book selections, partially inspired by the Space Foundation’s National Space Symposium, which is held in Colorado Springs, are all space-themed: Rocket Boys/October Sky by Homer Hickam, Have Space Suit Will Travel by Robert Heinlein, The Space Tourist’s Handbook by Eric Anderson and Joshua Piven, Community: The Structure of Belonging by Peter Block, Space Wars: The Fisrt Six Hours of WWIII by Bill Scott, and other reading selections appropriate for younger readers.

Additional Space Foundation’s APPR-related activities are:

• A presentation to Pikes Peak Community College students of the state of the space industry by Space Foundation Chief Executive Officer Elliot Pulham Oct. 14
• Sponsorship of the The Final Frontier Colorado Springs Philharmonic concert Oct. 17
• A Lunar Lander Design Challenge program for “tweens” presented by the Space Foundation education team on Oct. 21 at Colorado Springs’ East Library
• A Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) Design Challenge program for teens presented by the Space Foundation education team on Oct. 28 at Colorado Springs’ East Library
