President Signs Directive for Return to the Moon and Future Travel to Mars

Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team

On Dec. 11, President Trump signed Space Policy Directive 1, the first recommendation of the reconvened National Space Council.

According to the Space Foundation’s Washington, D.C., representatives, the order makes it national policy for NASA to return humans to the Moon for long-term exploration and use, and to build a foundation for eventual trips to Mars. Also, President Trump and Vice President Pence mentioned the value in terms of military applications that space provides, and conveyed that innovation in space will mean more jobs.

“The Space Foundation supports this positive and logical step to return to the Moon and lay a foundation for future travel to Mars,” said Thomas Zelibor, Space Foundation Chief Executive Officer.

Humans were last on the Moon in 1972, during the Apollo 17 mission.
