Mission Spaceflight is Named Space Certification Space Educational Product

Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 9, 2019) — The Space Foundation announces the addition of Mission Spaceflight to its Space Certification program in the category of Space Educational Products.

Earth and Space Exploration LLC’s Mission Spaceflight training course enables those who are interested in taking steps toward the stars.

The first commercial spaceflight training course in the Pacific Northwest opened for enrollment in April 2019.  The four-day course is taught by:

  • Portland State University professor Dr. Cameron M. Smith
  • Mission Spaceflight founder Trent Tresch
  • Firefighter Kim Cunningham

According to Tresch, staff has undergone extensive spacesuit training in the Northwest and at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. With their access to commercial space pressure suits, the class curriculum was developed over the last 12 months and was accredited by Western Colorado University as a 1-credit course.

“By combining our spacesuits with moderately-priced spaceflight training, we’re thrilled to be contributing to the great history of aviation and especially aviation in the Pacific Northwest,” said Tresch, a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and ASTM F47 commercial spaceflight committee.

Course participants log several hours pressurized with air and breathing oxygen in Pacific Spaceflight IVA spacesuits, learning how to work comfortably at suit pressures. Students also train for a variety of off-nominal scenarios, including water landing and capsule egress. Learning complies with Code of Federal Regulations standards (14 CFR 460.51 spaceflight participant) for such emergency situations.

The course covers further introductory topics such as pressure suit history, flight physiology and response to emergency spaceflight situations.

Dr. Smith, a founder of Pacific Spaceflight, a think-tank developing cheaper spacesuits for the last 10 years, said, “Lots of people are going to go to space, and they all need spacesuits and spacesuit training of one kind or another. We’re getting the ball rolling in this exciting field!”

As a Certified Space Education Product, Mission Spaceflight is recognized by the Space Foundation as a source of information and training in the commercial space industry. Unlike other commercially available training programs, Mission Spaceflight is open to all of Earth’s citizens, no Ph.D. required.

The inclusivity of the program fosters the organization’s mission of democratizing space exploration and technology.

“This was a high-quality experience. I learned quite a lot and had fun doing it,” said Mitchel Gogert, a mechanical engineer.

“The course was informative and fun. Great use of equipment visuals and demonstrations. I’d definitely recommend it,” said David Murray, Mars Desert Research Station GreenHab Manager.
