Significant Congressional Participation at the 23rd National Space Symposium

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Mar. 28, 2007) — The 23^rd National Space Symposium – the space industry’s premier conference – will have a significant level of Congressional participation. Two Members of Congress with interests in the space industry will provide featured remarks, and a”Congressional Staff Roundtable” consisting of senior professional space staff will provide key insight from Capitol Hill. These individuals will bring important observations and assessments about issues facing the space industry, from the Congressional perspective. The Symposium annually brings together all sectors of space – civil, commercial, and national security – to discuss the most current and pressing issues facing the space industry. The 23^rd National Space Symposium is scheduled for April 9-12, 2007, at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

This year, Congress has focused considerable attention on space, holding hearings on issues from the NASA budget and the impact of FY 2007 shortfalls on NASA and the Orion program to the implications of the recent Chinese ASAT test. The Honorable Congressman Ken Calvert, ranking member, Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics, Committee on Science and Technology, United States House of Representatives, will open the program with featured remarks on Tuesday, April 9 at 8:40 a.m. Calvert, who represents California’s 44th Congressional District, is a long-time advocate for both civil and national security space issues.

On Thursday, April 12, The Honorable Doug Lamborn will provide featured remarks at 11:15 a.m. Congressman Lamborn represents the 5th District of Colorado, which includes U.S. Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, Peterson Air Force Base, Schriever Air Force Base, the United States Air Force Academy, and Fort Carson.

The “Congressional Staff Roundtable,” scheduled for 11:30 on Tuesday, April 10 will provide insight into the strengths, concerns, and challenges facing the national security space sector in securing and maintaining funding for current and future projects. Mr. Adam Harris, professional staff member, Majority, House Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Defense, United States House of Representatives; and Mr. Josh Hartman, professional staff member, Minority, House Appropriations Committee, Subcommittee on Defense, United States House of Representatives, are participating in this discussion.

The Symposium will also feature a by-invitation luncheon in honor of Congressional Members and staff delegations, Maj Gen William L. Shelton, USAF, commander, 14th Air Force, Air Force Space Command, and commander, Joint Functional Component Commander for Space, United States Strategic Command, will speak about national security space from an operational perspective. The luncheon is co-sponsored by Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corp.
