Norman R. Augustine to receive Space Foundation’s Highest Individual Award

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.(Feb. 27, 2002) —

Norman R. Augustine, Chairman Emeritus of Lockheed Martin and Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, will receive the first Space Foundation General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award. The award is being presented to Augustine for his lifetime commitment to education, aerospace engineering and the future of the industry and nation, and for his stellar accomplishments at Lockheed Martin. “The General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award is meant to recognize those legendary figures whose contributions to the exploration, development, and utilization of space are of historic proportion and consequence,” said Space Foundation President & CEO Elliot G. Pulham. “No one better fits that description, and no one’s life accomplishments better mirror the ideals and principles of the late General Hill, than does Norman Augustine,” Pulham said. Before joining the Princeton faculty in 1997, Augustine was chairman and CEO of Martin Marietta. He subsequently became president of Lockheed Martin when it formed in 1995, and later served as CEO and chairman. Prior to joining Martin Marietta, he was undersecretary of the U.S. Army. Augustine’s volunteer leadership positions include president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, chairman of the Defense Science Board and member of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Augustine has published three books: “Augustine’s Travels,” “The Defense Revolution” and “Augustine’s Laws.” He earned both BSE and MSE Degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton. The General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award will be presented April 11 during the Space Technology Hall of Fame Dinner at the 18th National Space Symposium. The symposium, which gathers top space leaders from industry, the military and government, is hosted by the Space Foundation and takes place April 8-11 at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.
