Space Education Launch Pad for Teachers and Students in Omaha

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sep. 23, 2008) — The Space Foundation is pleased to announce a significant space education opportunity in conjunction with Strategic Space and Defense 2008. Presented by the Space Foundation and Space News, Strategic Space and Defense, the global security conference for space and defense professionals, is set to take place at the Qwest Center Omaha Convention Center and Arena in Omaha, Neb., 6-8 October. A student program will be conducted for local 8th – 12th grade teachers and their classes on Wednesday, 8 October.

The student program consists of a presentation covering space history, an introduction to careers in space, a tour of designated booths in the Strategic Space and Defense exhibit center featuring leading aerospace companies and organizations, and a space science workshop. Workshop topics include solar heating’s effect on atmospheric motion and the electromagnetic spectrum as seen through the telescope. The student program is co-sponsored by NASA Nebraska Space Grant.

The Space Foundation’s education programs support teachers and PreK-12 students using space-based lessons and principles incorporated into standards-based curriculum to integrate science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) into all content areas.  The Space Discovery Institute, Teacher Liaison program, annual Space Career Fair, and free online lesson bank for educators are some of the education tools the Space Foundation offers to equip teachers and their students.
