NASA Budget will be Topic at 26th National Space Symposium COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Mar. 4, 2010) — President Barack Obama’s NASA budget proposal, which has ignited a firestorm throughout Congress and the space community, will be a major topic of discussion at the upcoming 26th National Space Symposium – both in the networking sessions and on the podium.

The premier gathering of the global space community, the 26th National Space Symposium will be held April 12-15 at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo. The first main program event will be a panel, NASA – The Budget and The Way Ahead, on Tuesday morning, April 13. Then, on the closing day, April 15, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden will take the stage as a featured speaker.

The NASA – The Budget and The Way Ahead panel, which will be moderated by Space Foundation Board of Directors Treasurer Lon Levin, will feature speakers with a variety of viewpoints on civil and commercial space:

  • Bretton Alexander, president, Commercial Spaceflight Federation, and chair, Commercial Space Committee, NASA Advisory Council
  • Frank DiBello, president and chief executive officer, Space Florida
  • Lori B. Garver, deputy administrator, NASA
  • George C. Nield, Ph.D., associate administrator for commercial space transportation, Federal Aviation Administration
  • Scott Pace, Ph.D., professor of the practice of international affairs and director of the Space Policy Institute, George Washington University

The panel will discuss the implications and potential outcomes of the President’s budget proposal, which set new strategic direction for the nation’s civil space agency. Additional panelists may be added later.

Bolden (pictured above), who will speak at the end of the Symposium, is expected to provide his perspective on the budget debate and his vision for NASA’s future.

“NASA is at perhaps the most significant crossroads in its history. There is incredible debate within – and outside – the industry about how the U.S. should manage, fund, and, we hope, advance our space program,” said Space Foundation Chief Executive Officer Elliot Pulham. “The 26th National Space Symposium is the ideal place to further this discussion. Almost everyone who has a stake in space is there.”
