Statement on the Passing of Capt. James Lovell Jr., USN (Ret.), NASA Astronaut

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Aug. 8. 2025 — Heather Pringle, CEO of Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 to advance the global space community, issued the following statement today on the passing of legendary NASA Apollo astronaut, Jim Lovell.
“Jim Lovell’s life and leadership are an example of how persistence, skill, and teamwork make all the difference in mission success. These were special qualities he embodied throughout his life as a US Naval aviator, pioneering NASA astronaut, and leader to generations around the world. Space Foundation extends its deepest sympathies to the Lovell Family, their friends, and all in the space community who found themselves inspired by his incredible career.”
Space Foundation was proud to honor Capt. Lovell as the second recipient of our highest honor, the General James E. Hill Space Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003. He was also an Honorary Member of Space Foundation and a frequent attendee at the annual Space Symposium where he had many friends who were always happy to see him.
