COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Jan. 14, 2026 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983 to advance the global space community, today announced that Gen. (Ret.) Lance W. Lord has been selected as the 2026 recipient of its highest honor, the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award. Lord, a retired four-star general of the U.S. Air Force, previously served as Commander of Air Force Space Command.
Named in honor of Space Foundation’s late, longtime chairman, Gen. James E. Hill, USAF (Ret.), the award recognizes outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves through lifetime contributions of 20 years or more to the welfare or betterment of humankind. These contributions are made through the exploration, development and use of space or the use of space technology, information, themes or resources in academic, cultural, industrial or other pursuits that benefit humanity broadly.
General Lord’s career spans the development and leadership of modern U.S. space and missile operations. As commander of Air Force Space Command, he was responsible for the development, acquisition and operational readiness of the Air Force’s space and missile systems, overseeing a global network of satellite command and control, communications, missile warning, and launch facilities. He led more than 39,700 space professionals who delivered combat capabilities to North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Strategic Command. During his service, Lord commanded two intercontinental ballistic missile wings in Wyoming and North Dakota and later commanded a space wing in California responsible for satellite launch and ballistic missile test operations. He also held senior leadership roles at Headquarters Air Force Space Command, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and as assistant vice chief of staff of the U.S. Air Force.
Gen. Lord’s service to the space community extends far beyond his time in military service. He is the chairman and founder of L2 Aerospace LLC and has served as a member and advisor to numerous boards and organizations including Aerojet Rockedyne, Challenger Learning Centers, the U.S. Strategic Command Senior Advisory Group, the Iridium Corporation’s Government Advisory Board, Chandra Space Technologies LLC, General Dynamics Mission Systems, and others.
Lord’s career reflects a sustained commitment to education and professional development. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Otterbein College and a master’s degree in industrial management from the University of North Dakota. His professional military education included Squadron Officer School; Air Command and Staff College, where he was a distinguished graduate; Air War College; the National Defense University’s Capstone Course; and the Joint Flag Officer Warfighting Course. He later served in senior education and training positions, including commandant of Squadron Officer School, commander of Second Air Force, commander of Air University, and director of education for Air Education and Training Command.
“General Lance W. Lord’s contributions are foundational to America’s space enterprise,” said Space Foundation CEO Heather Pringle. “Through decades of service, he shaped forces, built institutions, and developed capabilities that continue to safeguard our nation and advance humanity’s reach in space. His vision and integrity, along with a deep commitment to excellence, inspired generations of space professionals. It is with deep respect and gratitude that we present General Lord with our highest honor, the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award, recognizing a lifetime of leadership that endures far beyond his remarkable career.”
“Being selected for the General James E. Hill Lifetime Space Achievement Award is an extraordinary honor. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside remarkable leaders, colleagues and partners whose dedication has shaped every milestone we achieved together. I am especially grateful to my family, whose support has grounded and inspired me through every chapter of this journey. To be included among the heroes and legends who have received this award before me is profoundly humbling, and I accept it with deep appreciation for the entire space community that has made this work so meaningful,” said Lord.
The award will be presented at Space Foundation’s 41st annual Space Symposium, to be held April 13-16, 2026, at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.
