Leader of Japanese space program to address 22nd National Space Symposium

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Mar. 14, 2006) — The Space Foundation confirmed today that Mr. Kaoru Mamiya, vice president, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will be a featured speaker at the 22nd National Space Symposium. He will address symposium attendees Thursday, April 6 at 2:00 p.m. The 22nd National Space Symposium takes places April 3-6, 2006, at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. Mamiya was appointed the vice president of the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) in August 2003 and became the vice president of JAXA in October 2003 when NASDA, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) and the National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL) were merged to create JAXA. Mamiya contributed to the integration of the three space agencies and led the development of JAXA’s long-term strategy. Prior to his current position, he was the deputy minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and previously worked at the Science and Technology Agency (STA). JAXA is a partner in the construction of the International Space Station and provides an experiment module called Kibo. Additionally, five JAXA astronauts Dr. Mamoru Mohri, Dr. Chiaki Mukai, Dr. Takao Doi, Dr. Koichi Wakata, and Soichi Noguchi have flown aboard space shuttle missions.
