End of Summer Celebration at the Space Foundation Discovery Center Aug. 8

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Aug. 5, 2015) – Summer is almost over, but not until the Space Foundation Discovery Center sends it out with a bang. The final “Super Saturday” event of the season will take place Aug. 8, from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and will feature special guests, demonstrations and Astronaut Ice Cream.

Heatsheets® Space Blankets will be given to early arriving guests, while supplies last. With interactive educational fun for all ages, everyone is sure to find something to spark their interests this weekend.

In this Journey to the Future-themed day, guests will have the opportunity to learn about Nikola Tesla and his Colorado Springs connection, build a Rube Goldberg Machine, add their own touches to the City of the Future project and even invent their own game.

Hear J. Brian “Bear” Lihani speak about his book NORAD and Cheyenne Mountain AFS from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., and then do some solar gazing with the Southern Colorado Astronomical Society from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., weather permitting.

Additional fee activities on Aug. 8 include:

  • Minecraft® in the AGI Space Missions Simulation Laboratory

Session 1: 11:00 a.m. – noon
Session 2: 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
($5 additional fee, seating limits apply, appropriate for ages 8 and up)

  • Drive a Robotic Mars Rover

Sessions on the hour, starting at 11:00 a.m. and ending at 3:00 p.m.
($5 additional fee, appropriate for ages 5 and up with adult participation)

With the conclusion of “Summer of Discovery,” the Space Foundation Discovery Center will be moving to School Year Hours beginning Aug. 16, Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The Perseids Meteor Shower is also occurring this month, making it the ideal time to see the traveling exhibit, “Great Balls of Fire,” which details the origins and study of asteroids, comets and meteors. This temporary exhibit will be leaving the Discovery Center Sept. 12 and is included in the price of admission.
