Space Foundation Discovery Center Features "Blue Planet, Green Living"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (June 24, 2013) - On Saturday, June 29, come to the Discovery Center and test drive a Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf electric car for the Space Foundation Summer of Discovery event "Blue Plant, Green Living."

In recognition of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, visitors will be invited to do the Space Foundation version of the Hill Climb by driving an electric car up a nearby hill, then watching how electricity recharges the battery on descent. The cars will be provided by Drive SunShine Institute (DSI), www.drivesunshine.org, a Summer of Discovery event co-sponsor.

Visitors will also be able to peddle their way to a healthy snack on a special stationary Boulder Bike Blender™. Burn calories while blending organic bike-powered fruit smoothies. The smoothies will be free with the first 100 admissions to the Discovery Center starting at 10:00 a.m. on June 29. Additional bike-powered smoothies will be $3 each.

The Space Foundation Discovery Center is the region's only space, science and technology attraction, and is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays. The Discovery Center is located at 4425 Arrowswest Dr., Colorado Springs, Colo., off of Garden of the Gods Rd., west of Centennial Blvd. Each week at the Discovery Center this summer focuses on a specific theme, culminating with a full day of special activities each Saturday, included in the price of the Saturday admission.

Daily admission is $9 for adults, $7 for seniors (age 65+), $7 for college students with I.D., $3 for children ages 4-17. Children age three years and younger are admitted free.

Admission is free with military I.D., to those impacted by Colorado wildfires and to first responders.

Bring Food Donation for Colorado Wildfire Relief
The Space Foundation Discovery Center has been designated a collection point for Care and Share Food Bank for Southern Colorado. The public may bring food donations to the Space Foundation Discovery Center between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays. Anyone bringing a food donation will receive a $2 off admission coupon to the Discovery Center.

Ride Your Bike Wednesday, June 26
In recognition of Ride Your Bike to Work Day, if you ride your bike to the Discovery Center on Wednesday, June 26, between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., bring your helmet inside to receive half off regular admission for that day.

Also on Wednesday, there will be a family-friendly presentation for all ages by Colorado Springs Utilities from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m., "Water Wise."

Interactive Display Thursday, June 27
Waste Management is hosting an all day interactive display "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle," 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The display focuses on how much trash we produce, how long it takes to break down in a landfill and the importance of recycling.

While at the Discovery Center on Saturday, bring young children to the reading corner for story time with one of our guest readers.
