Space Foundation Offers Scholarship for Hawaiian Educators
Written by: developer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sept. 10, 2013) – Each year, the Space Foundation provides professional development for a qualified educator through the Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship, established specifically for educators of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry, or who work with PreK-12 students of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry.
The scholarship covers tuition, fees, expenses and lodging for the recipient to travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., during the summer of 2014 and participate in one of the Space Foundation’s week-long Space Across the Curriculum courses.
These intensive week-long graduate-level summer courses for PreK-12 educators provide space-related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) content that is instantly transferable to the classroom. All courses are hands-on and focus on national standards and STEM principles, and the courses are structured to adapt lessons to all grade levels and all curriculum areas. Public, private and homeschool teachers are welcome.
Earlier this year, a math and science teacher at Kanu o ka ‘Aina New Century Charter School in Waimea, Hawai’i, was selected as the 2013 recipient and he used the scholarship to attend the Meteorology and Space Weather course to help his students better understand weather patterns.
The facilities at Space Foundation world headquarters in Colorado Springs offer extraordinary teaching tools, including Science On a Sphere®, developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) with more than 360 datasets, special software, satellite imagery and four projectors to render images that provide full-motion views of the Earth, Sun, moons and planets in space. Space Foundation labs also offer programmable robots used in a simulated Martian environment, and sophisticated software programs used by professional aerospace engineers.

About the Scholarship
Established in 2005 and funded by Space Foundation Chief Executive Officer Elliot Holokauahi Pulham and his wife, Cynthia A. Pulham, the scholarship honors the memory of Elliot’s grandmother, Lucy Enos, who was born in Pahala, Hawai’i, in 1898. Enos’ father was a Scottish immigrant and her mother, Keali’iholokahiki, was a native Hawaiian. Enos died in Hilo, Hawai’i, in 1976.
The Space Foundation takes an active role in educational and space-related activities in Hawai’i, and is an annual co-sponsor of the Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance (AMOS) Conference, a program of the Maui Economic Development Board, Inc. (MEBD). Elliot Pulham will be a featured speaker at the conference in Maui this week, and will host the Space Foundation Pau Hana Networking Reception for New Generation Space Leaders, age 35 or younger, on Sept. 11 at the Wailea Beach Marriot. The event is part of the Space Foundation’s New Generation Initiatives, which provides professional development and networking opportunities to college students and professionals aged 35 and under.
