2007 Flight of Teacher Liaisons Inducted

Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Apr. 2, 2007) — Today the Space Foundation announced the selection of the 2007 Flight of Teacher Liaisons. This year’s flight consists of 29 individuals from across the country including traditional and non-traditional educators from public and private schools and the aerospace industry. The highly-regarded Teacher Liaison program, now in its fourth year, selects teachers who actively promote space and science education in the classroom and the community. The teachers who are chosen for this honor serve as advocates for space science education, and conduits into their classrooms, schools, and districts. The Liaisons will be honored at the 23rd National Space Symposium, which will be held at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, April 9 – 12, 2007.

The recognition and induction ceremony for the Teacher Liaisons will take place at a breakfast on Tuesday, April 10. Col Eileen Collins, USAF (Retired), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronaut and first female shuttle commander will serve as keynote speaker. Following the breakfast, more than 100 current and former Teacher Liaisons will participate in a day-long professional development workshop. Presentations by experts will contain the most current space exploration information and curriculum activities for the teachers to take back to their classrooms to inspire the next generation of explorers. The day will include presentations by Mr. Steven Bennett, president and chief executive officer, Starchaser Industries; Ms. Lisa Brown, aerospace education specialist, NASA AESP – Johnson Space Center; and conclude with remarks by CDR John Herrington, USN (Retired), former NASA Astronaut, director, Center for Space Studies, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, vice president/director of Flight Operations and chief pilot of XP Spaceplane, Rocketplane Limited, Inc. The Teacher Liaison program and associated Teacher Liaison events at the 23rd National Space Symposium are co-sponsored by The Boeing Company.

Teacher Liaison selection is made by a panel consisting of an industry expert, Teacher Liaison alumni, current Teacher Liaison, and Space Foundation representative. All educators who have a desire to further integrate space and science education into their curriculum are eligible to apply for this program. Those selected as liaisons transition to alumni status after a one-year term.

In addition to this and other noteworthy education programs including the Fifth Annual Space Career Fair, Student Tours, and recognition of the NOAA Art Contest winners, the 23rd National Space Symposium is packed with featured speeches and other timely panel discussions by the most senior government officials and industry leaders in space. Among the more than 7,000 expected registrants, guests, speakers, exhibitors, and media are the senior executive leadership from NASA, NOAA, and other civil space and government agencies; the commercial space and satellite broadcasting industry; the Department of Defense and military space commands; space entrepreneurs; universities and academia; and senior representatives from the global space industry.
