Maui Educator Wins Lucy Enos Scholarship
Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Jul. 12, 2007) — The Space Foundation announces the selection of Jennifer R. Wolski as the 2007 recipient of the Lucy Enos Memorial Scholarship for teachers. Wolski teaches special education, physical, life, and earth science at King Kekaulike High School on the island of Maui. The scholarship provides funding for Wolski to participate in one of the Space Foundation’s Summer Institute courses, held in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Wolski teaches at the King Kekaulike High School where 90 percent of the students are of Hawaiian descent. In her three years teaching students with special needs, she has seen her students’ interest in space motivate them to learn about science, despite their learning disabilities. She plans to incorporate the knowledge and experience gained at the Summer Institute in an environmental science course she will begin teaching this fall.
Wolski earned a master of science degree in learning disabilities and brain research, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology.
Elliot G. and Cynthia A. Pulham of Colorado Springs fund the scholarship, which honors the memory of Pulham’s grandmother, Lucy Enos, who was born in Pahala, Hawaii, in 1898. Her father was a Scottish immigrant and her mother, Keali’iholokahiki, a native Hawaiian. Lucy married Henry Enos and together they raised a son, a daughter, and three adopted children while successfully homesteading a sugar plantation in Pahala and a cattle ranch on lands in Kioloka’a and Kamaoa. Lucy Enos died in Hilo, Hawaii, in 1976.
The Space Foundation fosters educational space endeavors through a variety of programs including the Summer Institute where participating teachers can earn continuing education credits, graduate credits, or work toward a master’s degree with a space studies science emphasis. The Space Foundation offers two distinct master’s degrees in space studies. Summer Institute participants can earn a master of education degree, emphasis in space studies leadership through Regis University, School for Professional Studies, or earn a master of education degree with an emphasis in science education/space studies from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, College of Education Curriculum and Instruction. Other Space Foundation education initiatives include an annual Space Career Fair, Teacher Liaison program, and a free online lesson bank for educators.
