As we proceed into the autumn, much of the focus of the space policy community in Washington, D.C., has been absorbing and digesting the recently released Executive Summary report from the committee on the Review of U.S. Human Space Flight Plans. Both the House of Representatives and Senate have already held oversight hearings on the report's findings and its set of options for the next steps after the space shuttles are retired. The committee's chairman, Norman Augustine (pictured), fielded a variety of questions from lawmakers seeking more insight and details as they grapple with NASA's current budgetary challenges, as well as crafting a new NASA Authorization bill. Additionally, the White House's next steps are being eagerly anticipated.
The Space Foundation's government affairs team will be spending the next several weeks debriefing space policy decision makers on the recent Space Foundation-led mission to several Chinese space facilities, including a number of installations in Beijing and the remote Jiuquan launch center. For details on Space Foundation's delegation to China, see The View From Here in this issue of Space Watch.
