Charles County Public Schools

The Space Foundation has worked in partnership with the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) in Charles County, Md., since 2007. Since the initial two weeks of training we provided the first year, we have expanded into a full-blown New Horizons program that has reached teachers, students and community members with innovative and inspiring space-themed classes, workshops, programs and events.

Each year, we provide graduate-level in-residence Space Across the Curriculum courses for CCPS PreK-12 educators during the summer. Throughout the year, we stay involved with CCPS, providing STARS and New Horizons programs that have included top-level space speakers from nearby Washington, D.C.

And, each year we build on the accomplishments of the previous years by reaching more teachers and their students. CCPS in this progressive school system is dedicated to developing space-based science, technology, engineering and mathematics (S-STEM) skills.

In 2011, CCPS Superintendent James Richmond won the Alan Shepard Technology in Education Award, which we present annually in concert with the Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) and NASA.
