Space Foundation Seeking Outstanding Technologies for 20th Space Technology Hall of Fame Class

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Sep. 12, 2007) — The Space Foundation is accepting nominations for the 2008 class of inductee technologies for its prestigious Space Technology Hall of Fame. 2008 will mark the 20th anniversary of this program that honors the remarkable innovation of organizations and individuals who transform space technology into commercial products that improve life on Earth. The Space Foundation, in cooperation with NASA, established the Space Technology Hall of Fame to increase public awareness of the benefits that result from space exploration programs and encourage further innovation. Nominations for 2008 will be accepted until October 19, 2007.
Since 1988, the Space Technology Hall of Fame has honored 56 technologies as well as the innovating organizations and individuals behind them. These incredible technologies include life saving medical devices, health improvement technologies, satellite and telecommunication technologies, and many other practical commercial devices that have shaped life as we now know it. Some noteworthy examples of inductee technologies are the DeBakey Heart Pump; the automatic external defibrillator; non-invasive breast biopsy technology; MRI and CAT scan imaging; anti-shock garments; LASIK eye surgery; implantable pacemakers and hearing aids; and technologies that power cellular phones, terrestrial networks, and satellite broadcast television and radio communications.
Anyone may submit a nomination for a technology that originated with the space program and is now used to improve life on Earth. Each nomination is reviewed for completeness, assessed by technical experts, and ranked by a prestigious panel of judges according to Economic Benefit, Public Awareness, Societal Benefit, Longevity, and Public/ Private/ Partnership Investment.
Technologies and innovators selected for induction in 2008 will be recognized during special award ceremonies during the 24th National Space Symposium. Conducted by the Space Foundation, the symposium is the premier annual gathering of the global space community. The 24th National Space Symposium will take place April 7 – 10, 2008, at The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colo.
