ISU Announces Newly Appointed President and Dean

Graz, Austria (Sept. 14, 2011) – On September 8th, the Board of Trustees of the International Space University (ISU) has named Prof. Walter Peeters as its new President succeeding Dr. Michael K. Simpson.
Prof. Peeters holds a bachelor degree in engineering and applied economics from Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, a Master of Business Administration degree from Louvain and Cornell University as well as a Ph.D. in Industrial Organization from TU Delft in the Netherlands. Prof. Peeters has been on an ESA detachment to ISU since 2000 acting successively as Associate Dean and Dean and also professor in Space Business and Management. He also served as co-chair in the Business and Management department of the SSP program. Prof. Peeters joined ESA in 1983 in a number of project control and management functions. He was Head of the Coordination Office of the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, with strong involvement in the EUROMIR missions. Author of various high quality articles on incentive contracting; project management, space commercialization and space tourism, Prof. Peeters is also the author of the standard work “Space Marketing” (Kluwer, 2000). He is also Director of the Isle of Man based International Institute of Space Commerce, a think-tank dedicated to research activities in the field of space commercialization.

To fulfil and carry on Prof. Peeters ISU’s academic development, Dr Angie Bukley has been a natural candidate being the former Associate Dean of ISU and has been officially appointed as Dean of the University as well as Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Prof. Bukley has over 25 years of professional experience in defense and space systems and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Prior to joining ISU, Prof. Bukley served as Director of the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma, Tennessee, USA. Before that she was the Associate Dean for research & graduate studies in the Russ College of Engineering and Technology at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio, USA. She spent five years with The Aerospace Corporation in Albuquerque, USA assigned to the Airborne Laser System Program Office at Kirtland Air Force Base. Prof. Bukley has worked with a number of defense contractors on a wide variety of programs. She also spent seven years at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, USA where she directed the Large Space Structures Laboratory and worked on remote sensing applications. She is an alumna of the ISU SSP 1993 and ISU faculty member, having held department and team project chair positions during the SSP and M.Sc. programs since 1995. Since 2009, Prof. Bukley has been the Director of the Space Studies Program.
Prof. Oosterlinck also commented on this nomination: “Prof. Bukley has such a strong experience of what a Dean position implies that I trust her ability and academic knowledge to carry on strengthening ISU’s leadership in space education.”

Le 8 septembre dernier, le Conseil d’Administration de l’International Space University a nommĂ© Prof. Walter Peeters comme nouveau PrĂ©sident remplaçant ainsi le Dr. Michael Simpson.
Prof. Peeters diplĂ´mĂ© d’une licence en IngĂ©nierie et Economie AppliquĂ©e de l’UniversitĂ© Catholique de Louvain, Belgique, un Master of Business Administration de Louvain et Cornell University ainsi qu’un Ph.D. en Organisation Industrielle de TU Delft au Pays Bas. Prof. Peeters est dĂ©tachĂ© de l’Agence Spatiale EuropĂ©enne (ESA) Ă ‘ISU depuis 2000 agissant successivment en tant que Vice-Doyen puis Doyen et Professeur en Business et Management spatial. Prof. Peeters rejoin l’ESA in 1983 dans divers fonctions de gestion de projets et management. Il a dirigĂ© notamment le bureau de Coordination du Centre des Astronautes Ă Cologne avec une grande implication dans les missions EUROMIR. Auteur de divers articles de reference en management de projets, commercialisation spatiale et tourisme spatial; Prof. Peeters est aussi l’auteur du livre “Space Marketing” (Kluwer, 2000). Il agit Ă©galement en tant que Directeur de l’International Institute of Space Commerce base sur l’Ile de Man, un think-tank dediĂ© aux activitĂ©s de recherchĂ© dans le domaine de la commercialisation liĂ©e au spatial.

Pour continuer Ă renforcer le dĂ©veloppement universitaire qu’avait mis en place le Prof. Peeters, le Prof. Angie Bukley, anciennement Vice-Doyenne, fut une candidate toute choisie et a Ă©tĂ© officiellement nommĂ© Doyenne et Vice-prĂ©sidente des Affaires AcadĂ©miques
Prof Bukley a plus de 25 ans d’expĂ©rience professionnelle dans la dĂ©fense et des systèmes spatiaux et est diplĂ´mĂ©e d’un doctorat de l’UniversitĂ© de l’Alabama d’Huntsville – USA. Avant cela elle fut Vice-doyenne pour la recherche et les Ă©tudes de troisième cycle pour l’École d’IngĂ©nieurs et de Technologie de Russ de l’UniversitĂ© de l’Ohio – USA. Elle Ă©galement a travaillĂ© cinq ans pour The Aerospace Corporation dans l’Albuquerque, assignĂ©e au Programme de Système Laser AĂ©roportĂ© Ă la Base Militaire AĂ©rienne de Kirtland. Prof Bukley aussi travaillĂ© avec un certain nombre d’entreprises de dĂ©fense sur une large variĂ©tĂ© de programmes.
Elle a aussi passĂ© sept ans Ă la NASA au Centre de Vol de Marshall Space oĂą elle a dirigĂ© le laboratoire « Large Space Structures » et a travaillĂ© sur des applications de tĂ©lĂ©dĂ©tection. Elle est une ancienne Ă©tudiante du programme d’Ă©tĂ© de l’ISU (Space Studies Programme 1993) et depuis 1995 elle fait partie du corps enseignant de l’ISU. Depuis 2009, Prof. Bukley est la Directrice du programme d’Ă©tĂ© « Space Studies Programme ».
Prof Oosterlinck commente: “Prof. Bukley a une si forte expĂ©rience de ce qu’est le rĂ´le d’un Doyen que j’ai confiance en sa capacitĂ© et sa connaissance du monde universitaire pour continuer Ă renforcer la position de l’ISU dans l’enseignement du spatial.”
