Twenty honor students from Yeungjin College in Daegu, South Korea, toured the Space Foundation Discovery Center in July as part of a week-long program called Global Leaders Exploration to the United States. The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs was instrumental in bringing them to Colorado Springs and to the Space Foundation for the visit. They were accompanied by Sandra Reno, associate director for international affairs, Office of International Affairs, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, and chaperone Saewon Park, who served as a translator when needed.
In addition to their tour of the Space Foundation, they visited other businesses in the area including Agilent Technologies, United States Olympic Training Center headquarters and Harland & Clark. They also got a taste of the local culture with visits to Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Rock Ledge Ranch Historic Site and the El Paso County Fair.
Their visit to the Space Foundation Discovery Center included a brief presentation from Space Foundation Manager – Community Relations and Protocol Kaye Kerr, giving the students some background and history as well as an overview of the Space Foundation and its mission. They were given an opportunity to explore the El Pomar Space Gallery and see the many exhibits on display including a visiting exhibit on loan from NASA, “Space Shuttle: Conquering Low Earth Orbit.” The students were given a demonstration of Science On a Sphere® (SOS), the centerpiece of the Space Foundation’s Northrop Grumman Science Center, which was developed by the NOAA. SOS uses special software, satellite imagery and four projectors to render images onto the global surface that provide dramatic, full-motion views of the Earth, Sun, moons and planets in space.
