Space Foundation Names Euclid Mission Team of European Space Agency as 2024 Space Achievement Award Recipient
Written by: Space Foundation Editorial Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Feb. 13, 2024 — Space Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded in 1983, offering information, education and collaboration for the global space ecosystem, today announced that the Euclid Mission Team of the European Space Agency (ESA) has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Space Achievement Award.
Established in 1995, Space Foundation’s Space Achievement Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have demonstrated attainment, breakthrough space technology, or program or product success representing critical milestones in the evolution of space exploration and development. The Space Achievement Award is presented annually at Space Symposium.
“The partnership between ESA and The Euclid Consortium demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to global collaboration,” said Space Foundation CEO Heather Pringle. “More than 1,200 people from 18 countries with diverse research skill sets are working together to advance our understanding of the universe. Their hard work has only just begun but it will make a profound impact on our understanding of how our galaxy was formed.”
Launched in July 2023 by Euclid, the dark universe mission observes the shapes, distances and movements of billions of galaxies up to 10 billion light-years away. The endeavor seeks to provide deeper insights into the workings of gravity, how the universe has expanded, and the characteristics and impact of dark energy and dark matter. Leveraging the collected data, Euclid aims to construct the most extensive cosmic 3D map ever assembled.
The award will be presented April 8, 2024, during Space Foundation’s Space Symposium opening ceremonies to be held at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.
